What does your team need?

I always wondered how some teams are successful and some are not. From outside, it looks like both the teams have same number of people with similar experience and profiles. So, what does one team lack than the other? I believe it is definitely the “Leadership” that makes the difference. You need a strong leader for any team. I am not even using the term “Manager” here as I think “Leader” is the better and more powerful word. All Leaders can be Managers but not all Managers can be Leaders.

A Leader is someone who trusts you, motivates you, encourages you, challenges you, empowers you, supports you, coaches you, guides you and someone you can look up to. I know I threw in a lot in the list, but each and every team member looks for these in their leader. Let’s talk through these qualities.

Trust

This is certainly an important quality of a Leader. A true leader builds the trust with their team member during the course of building the relationship. And trust should be two-way as well. Leader should trust the team member and the team member should trust the leader too. This obviously takes time and energy. But having the mutual trust helps the relationship and takes it to next level.

Motivation

Motivation is another important quality. Each team member gets motivated by a different factor. Identifying that motivation factor for each of your team member is really critical. If someone is motivated by a note of recognition or appreciation, providing that recognition in front of their peers motivates them better rather than taking them to a lunch privately. Some get motivated by money and there is nothing wrong with that. Those team members should be incentivized by giving a gift card or a free lunch. None of them need to be elaborate or expensive, but motivating the team members at the right time with the right factor is crucial.

Encouragement

A true leader encourages the team members when they come up with new ideas or suggestions. Even if you believe it is not going to work, do not tell the team members directly rather ask more questions and make them think through their idea. Innovation within the team starts with an encouragement from a true leader. If the team member has no encouragement to do anything outside their job responsibilities, there is not anything new in the team and no innovation occurs.

Challenge

Each team member has their own strengths and a strong leader identifies that and challenges them accordingly. Some get excited to be challenged on their strengths and some get excited to be challenged to work on their weaknesses as the opportunity of growth. Both allow the team members to learn and grow. This is one of the key things that a true leader needs to focus on.

Empowerment

True leaders empower their team members to achieve more. They understand that they need a strong team for the greater accomplishments. True leaders get excited when they identify a leader in the team and they never get worried about the competition.

Coaching

True leaders act as a coach to their team. They are readily available to guide and support in the right direction anytime. They create a mentor/mentee relationship with the team members and be successful with it. They understand that they are also learning from the coaching relationship.
True leaders understand that the team members look up to them. They talk, behave and do things the way they want the team members to do as well. They are honest and trustworthy to their team members.

True Leaders strive to excel as a role model.

2016 – A Year to Forget

I think this is one of the year that I would want to forget and move on in my life. Lot of heart aches, disappointments and embarrassments. Learnt lot of lessons, but still trying to figure out how to overcome and implement them going forward.

I have learnt multiple lessons throughout this year in a real hard way.

Empathy – I figured out that both my strength and weakness is Empathy. I can easily put myself in others’ shoes and relate to anyone’s feelings and thoughts quickly and I can read people easily. This is surely a great asset to anyone and for me it is like a curse as I worry about others all the time. I worry about others’ feelings and thoughts when they are least bothered about me. This quality is certainly an asset at work but a curse personally. People take advantage of my empathy and misuse it.

Unconditional Love – This is the year where I figured out there is nothing called unconditional love in this world. According to me, it does not even exist. Anyone can disagree, but in the reality, that is 100% true. People who disagreeing with me will figure this out at some point in their life like I did now. Any relationship that you have – be it a friend or a family, there is always something underlying.

God’s way – Whenever we are in trouble, we pray to God. Not everyone but surely most of us. I do not think we ever go to a temple to say thanks to God for whatever he gave us. But we go and ask him whenever we need something or to be fixed. The interesting thing is God has a strange way of handling your requests and needs. Either he helps you or creates another problem/worry that is larger than your current request/need. In that way, you forget about your ask and start worrying about your new problem. I experienced it too this year.

I had gone through (still going through) personal crisis in 2016. I have been hibernating for the last few months with all these crises and there are 2 things that is close to my heart which kept me going. First - My work – I started a new job in Feb, but took over extra responsibilities and enjoying the challenges, made some new friends at work and hiring more team members as usual. Second – My Dance – I performed few different dances in the last couple of months for my dance school as well as choreographed one to perform with friends. That practice sessions helped me a lot to relax. People who interacted with me on these fronts would not have noticed any change in me. I was being myself at my work and my dance.

I am really thankful that I have an outlet to put my energy and focus into. I would surely advise any of you who reads this to get a hobby where you can have your own me-time. It really helps us.

I am also thankful to 2 of my cousins who reached out to me (immediately within couple of days) asking whether I am ok and/or need any help. It was really nice of them.

I certainly need my personal time to think. My husband and kids are doing a decent job J and also letting me do my dance adjusting their schedules. Not sure how long I can stretch it, but it is a great opportunity for me to dance at this point of life. I can do it only because of them.

With all these confusions, the 3rd thing I still follow is lighting the lamp in my pooja room every day and tell a sloka. Not sure whether anything is going to change soon, but I do not want to give up.

Life circumstances are so relative and each one prioritize their problem in a very different way. Money is not the only happiness in the world, I tell my team members all the time that someone can make 30K and be happy in their life and someone could make 100K and be unhappy in their life. That’s 200% true. Money cannot bring or buy happiness for anyone in this world. Living in a rich country, driving a luxury car, having a great job does not equate to happiness.
There are tons of people who do not care about anyone else but themselves. I think they lead a better life as they do not worry about how others feel or what others want. They just lead their own selfish life.

This was an opportunity for me to realize how would other people react or reach out in difficult times. Whomever I empathized all the time did not care or worry about what happened, rather they were worried about how my hibernation affected them. I do not have the courage to love or trust anyone anymore.

Gist - I trusted everyone, empathized with anyone and expected the same from everyone around me. Which I know is really stupid, but it took this long for me to understand that my expectations are not practical. I need to change my expectations which in turn I need to change my behavior too. I am kind of disconnected from my personal world and using this time to reinvent myself and understand how to focus my energy and empathy going forward.

Few things that I learnt -

  •          Have a hobby/interest.
  •         You do not have control on others’ behavior. You have control only on how you react to it.
  •          Do not expect anything from anyone. Period.
  •          Just do your duty and move on.

Hope the New Year makes me wiser!

Kodi, Thodari, KIK, AYM, Kavalai Vendaam - Movie Review(s)

Watched few movies the last few days and thought how good directors have lost their golden touch.

Kodi - Out of this 5 movies, Kodi was way much better with story and performances. Dhanush and Trisha gave very good performances and the story is also little too different for tamil audience. You can surely watch it once.

Thodari – I can’t believe this is Prabu Solomon’s movie who made Kumki. It was one of the worst movie that I watched in recent times. Dhanush’s character was not even convincing, Keerthi Suresh looked awful and acted very bad, Thambi Ramaiah was irritating and the story line was not upto the mark. You do not even know why Prabu Solomon directed this movie? Just because he got lead pair’s callsheets. God only knows. Until the first 40 mins, only Thambi Ramaih was talking and the story did not even start. Please AVOID this.

Kadavul Irukaan Kumaaru (KIK) – This is another movie with no substance. I loved OKOK and Boss Engira Bhaskaran from director Rajesh. But this is a disaster, no clear story line, GV is acting the same, there were few funny moments from RJ Balaji, but that’s not enough for this movie. If you do not have anything useful to do, then watch this J.

Kavalai Vendaam – This was another kuppai movie. The director Deekay who took “Yaamirukka Bayamen” directed this movie. He completely lost control on the genre too.  You do not feel bad for the lead characters and their love, their breakup or anything. Just plain stupid. Jeeva should seriously think before committing to a movie. Very Disappointing.

Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (AYM) – I was supposed to watch this movie in theater. But THANK GOD, I did not spend $20 to watch this. This is the WORST movie made by Gautam Menon. He has couple of themes that he follows in all his movies – travel, police, divorcee, narration. He left the divorcee part and exactly followed the others. It started off ok but moved into a crazy movie. In my opinion, this movie can be show cased as how badly a movie can be made. There were so many logical loopholes and the way the second half was moving, it was a terrible pain to watch this movie. I usually do not stop in the middle and that’s the reason I watched it fully. The only graceful thing is the movie is – Thalli pogaadhe (that too to hear and not to watch). Gautam Menon should surely think outside the box or everything will be a disaster. PLEASE DO NOT WATCH IT.

Verdict - Kodi was watchable. Others - watch at your own risk!

Jayalalithaa - Irreplaceable

It was a huge shock for everyone when Jayalalithaa passed away last week on Dec 5th Monday. I still feel very weird about the whole situation. I do not have any political stand, but from the time I heard that she had cardiac arrest and was on life support, I had a strange feeling and felt very low. Not sure whether the government prepared the crowd one whole day before breaking the news on Monday night.

Lot of people hated her and commented on how she handled her own ministers, party people, media etc. People always critiqued her actions but this was the first ever situation where everyone felt bad for her.

I do not know whether it is because she does not have family which in turn made everyone pity on her or her hospital visit which remained a complete mystery for the whole 75 days or the braveness and the courage that she had and maintained throughout her life.

Not sure about how others feel, but for me I saw her as a woman of empowerment, woman of leadership, woman of courage, woman on determination, woman of strength. With the changes in society, women are getting into almost all fields and prove their intelligence and leadership. But politics is not easy for anyone. You should have lot of guts and strength to even survive.

Being an only woman on the top most level in the Tamil Nadu politics and surviving & strengthening the party is not an easy task. She was a lioness. She survived through all good and bad in her life. She came back as a phoenix bird every time something happened.

Even the Prime Minister had to come and meet her in Chennai at her residence. She never bothered to go to Delhi or visited other politicians outside Chennai very much.

Whoever is her successor – her friend Sasikala or her niece Deepa, no one can replace her courage, boldness and her leadership.

May her soul rest in peace.

Lyricist Na. Muthukumar – Rest in Peace

Yesterday when I got up, the first news that I saw on the internet was Na.Muthukumar’s death. I was deeply saddened by that news. He was very young and was a very talented lyricist in tamil industry. It was a big shock. Looks like he has a son and a daughter and the daughter is only 6 months old : (. How unfortunate it is?

He was very simple and his songs were very nice. All Tamil speaking people from around the world would have heard “Aanandha Yaazhai Meetugiraai” and it is an excellent song about a dad & daughter. He received national award for that song couple of years ago. It is like a national anthem for the dads who has daughters, but the irony is Muthukumar’s own daughter did not get to experience what her dad wrote about. Very heart broken. This is one of the situation where you question the existence of god.

I did not feel good the whole day and was hearing Aanandha yaazhai meetugiraai continuously.

I kept thinking about how he wrote those lyrics without having a daughter and once he had a baby girl this year, his lyrics would have made so much sense for him. But without any trace of remembrance with his little one he is gone. How much will she even remember him?

Indha mannil idhu pol yaaruminge endrum vaazhndhadhillai endru thondrudhadi – What a beautiful line……

Wish he had taken care of his health better. Our body is like a machine and after certain age, it is really important for us to maintain it for the long run. This is honestly an important message for lot of young dads. Be healthy and take care of yourself so that you can spend more life time with your kids.

I sincerely pray to God that his family get strength to overcome this difficult time. Time is the only healer of all losses.

Tamil industry lost a great lyricist but he will live forever in hearts of many.

Kabali Review – Magizhchi

We watched Kabali premiere show on July 21st Thursday evening. We really enjoyed the movie. It is the mix of both Director Ranjith & Rajinikanth movie.

Story is regular as most of the gangster movies but the backdrop set at Malaysia is new. I love Ranjith from his last 2 movies and think that he is an excellent writer. He is very clear and writes powerful dialogues. And “Madras” was awesome. Looks like he has a political view about the suppressed people in the society and he makes sure to talk about them in each and every movie which is really very good. This movie is not a regular Rajinkanth movie and it is not a regular Ranjith movie as well. It has the touch from both.

Rajinikanth acted in emotional role after a very long time. It was really nice to see him in a role that reflects his real age. He acted with ease and his acting skills showed up in this movie. Honestly directors did not use him well the last few years. There were some special moments for both Rajinikanth as well as for Ranjith in the movie. The scenes where Rajinikanth looking for his wife was dragged and looked tedious, but the moment that a guy tells Rajini that he saw Rajini’s wife and planning to take him tomorrow, you get that emotional feel about the pair and you start waiting with him. It was a great directorial scene in the movie.

I know there have been some negative reviews for this movie too, but I am not sure whether we are saying negative things for the sake of saying. I know this is neither a complete Rajinikanth movie nor a director Ranjith movie, but the first 15 and last 15 mins of the movie is a treat to Rajinikanth fans. You would still believe he is the hero. I know he is not handsome, not well built, aged etc but there is still something that attracts the audience. That needs to be accepted, people do not worship someone like this with no charmness. There is something positive and attractive about Rajinikanth. I really enjoyed the Rajinikanth moments in the movie. Some of those are not logical and cannot happen in real life, but if he does it looked convincing J. My daughters were born in another country and watching tamil movies with us is what their exposure to Tamil cinema. But they both were excited about Kabali releasing and waited with us the whole time and enjoyed watching the movie with the crowd on the premier show. They were screaming and had so much fun except the fact that the little one asked after 15 mins of the movie “Who is Kabali? Amma” J.

Like Kamalhasan says in Pammal K Sambandam movie, sila vishayam laam “Anubavikanum, aaraayakoodadhu”, this movie is the great example for it. Watch and enjoy for the moment.

It is all about experience and not about feedback. Enjoy the movie!

Uriyadi – Surprise Package

Last weekend was a movie marathon for us. We watched 2 Tamil movies Uriyadi, Vil Ambu and a English movie. But wanted to write my review only about Uriyadi.

The lead actor Vijay Kumar was actually the producer and director too. He also did the background score after the music director left the movie in the middle. It was a complete surprise package for 2 things – The lead actor was so very comfortable on screen and there is nothing you find that is new in him. He was very natural and did a fantastic job. The second thing was the screenplay – I do not know the exact term that use for this kind of screenplay, but thought it was very interesting.

It is like, first they show the scenes how some character wanted to happen and then they show what really happened. Not sure whether I am explaining clearly. But it was very good to watch. It was little gory, but overall it was a very good movie. It talks about the caste politics and how the student community is getting involved.

Very good effort by Vijay Kumar.
